Starting as a journalist for regional newspapers and The People in the 1950s, Hugh Johns became a football commentator in 1966 when ATV's Lew Grade gave him the honour of leading ITV's World Cup coverage. His warm, friendly style defined an era - from Geoff Hurst's hat-trick at Wembley to Pelé's brilliance in 1970's final. Known as "the voice of Midlands football" through his work on ATV's Star Soccer, he covered Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa championships, plus Manchester United's 1968 European Cup triumph.
