Early Career  

David Michael Croft was born on 19th June 1970 in Stevenage, England. He began his broadcasting journey in hospital radio at Radio Fairfield and spent three years at BBC Three Counties Radio as a sports reporter and editor.

Broadcasting Career Highlights  

  • Croft joined BBC Radio 5 Live in December 1998.  
  • He became the station's Formula One commentator in 2006, succeeding Maurice Hamilton.  
  •  In 2012, he joined Sky Sports as the lead commentator for their Formula One coverage.  
  • Over the years, Croft has covered numerous World Cups, Olympic Games, and other major sporting events.

Formula One Commentary  

  • Croft started his F1 commentary career in 2006 with BBC Radio 5 Live.  
  •  He joined the Sky Sports F1 team in 2012, partnering with Martin Brundle.  
  •  He is famously known for his iconic phrase, "It's lights out and away we go," which he delivers at the start of races.  
  • He celebrated his 250th Grand Prix as a commentator at the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Other Work  

  • Croft has provided commentary for Sky Sports Darts since 2013.
